Plant Whisper

The iris, better known simply as the sword lily, is only distantly related to lilies, despite the suggestion in its name. There are many different varieties of iris. In the Garden of Health, the yellow Iris pseudacorus and the German Iris are on display. In the past, it was planted near castles as a magical plant for defense against enemies, often stolen during sieges and planted at one's own castle. The famous fleur-de-lis in the Capetian coat of arms is not a lily, but a stylized iris. The iris spreads via underground runners and produces many seeds. It is therefore considered invasive. Its fragrance, which is found in some perfumes, is also invasive. Which ones, we won't reveal. Why not try smelling it yourself and sniff out the person wearing it? In traditional herbal medicine, the dried root of the iris, known as "violet root," was used to soothe teething children.
