Pennyroyal
Plant Whisper
Pennyroyal, a small ornamental plant, was formerly used medicinally. However, this is no longer the case, as its essential oil consists of 80–90% pulegone. Pulegone is a chemical compound, a monocyclic monoterpene ketone. It is attributed with a central nervous system depressant effect. Even in centigram doses, it can induce abortions. This was already known in 5th-century BC Greece. The Latin name Mentha pulegium hints at another traditional use: it was employed as a remedy against vermin. The species name 'pulegium' is derived from the Latin word for flea, 'pulex'.
