Plant Whisper

The grey-haired, aromatic leaves of clary sage, with their spicy fragrance, gave it its name. It must smell just as delicious to the wild bees and butterflies that pollinate it. The best way to experience it is to rub the fuzzy leaves between your thumb and forefinger, close your eyes, and inhale the scent. Bees and butterflies don't need to squeeze the fragrance out of the leaves with their fingers. They have fine antennae, consisting of many segments with countless tiny sensory hairs. These hairs contain olfactory cells that detect chemical substances from the air.

GOLDEN RULE for EVERYTHING: Eat only what you know! The rule applies: a handful of wild plants per person and day may be collected on public land. Use only washed plant parts that you can identify clearly – when in doubt, please refrain from using them.

TIP: One advantage of buying over-the-counter medicines from a pharmacy or specialist retailer is the expert advice on your symptoms.
