Plant Whisper

Spotted lungwort, or lungwort as Hildegard von Bingen called it, is hermaphroditic. It possesses both male and female reproductive organs and is pollinated by bees and flies.

The historical recommendation for its use in treating lung diseases stems from the resemblance of its leaves to lungs. Due to the pinkish-blue color change of its flower heads, it is colloquially known as Hansel and Gretel or Adam and Eve. Unlike the hydrangea, the color of the flowers is not an indicator of the soil's pH value, but rather reflects the flower's stage of development and its changing pH level.

Healing Properties

Because of its lung-like leaves, lungwort was considered a remedy for lung diseases from the 15th century onward. The dull white spots on the upper surface of the leaves were interpreted as resembling alveoli, and thus, according to the doctrine of signatures, it was used to treat diseases of the upper respiratory tract and lungs. Today, lungwort has not been classified as a traditional medicinal product. Its use is not recommended.

Lungwort is not currently recognized as a traditional medicine.

GOLDEN RULE for EVERYTHING: Eat only what you know! The rule applies: a handful of wild plants per person and day may be collected on public land. Use only washed plant parts that you can identify clearly – when in doubt, please refrain from using them.

TIP: One advantage of buying over-the-counter medicines from a pharmacy or specialist retailer is the expert advice on your symptoms.
