Plant Whisper
Common vervain (Verbena officinalis) is a traditional medicinal plant from the verbena family and has been known since antiquity. In the past, it was attributed with almost magical powers. In many cultures, it was known as an important religious ritual and protective plant: it was believed to heal injuries from iron weapons, dispel fever, alleviate illnesses, and even grant wishes or foster friendship. From June to September, it produces characteristic, elongated flower spikes with small, pale lilac flowers.
Botanical Facts
Healing Properties
Vervain has been used in folk medicine for centuries. Today, we know that its effects are primarily due to the bitter substances and tannins it contains.
It is used for minor digestive problems such as stomach upset, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. It is also traditionally used for colds, coughs, and nervous restlessness.
Even though the plant doesn't perform the "miracles" it was once believed to have, it is still valued as a versatile medicinal plant – although its effectiveness against colds is only partially proven.

GOLDEN RULE for EVERYTHING: Eat only what you know! The rule applies: a handful of wild plants per person and day may be collected on public land. Use only washed plant parts that you can identify clearly – when in doubt, please refrain from using them.
TIP: One advantage of buying over-the-counter medicines from a pharmacy or specialist retailer is the expert advice on your symptoms.
